The 1998 Dodge Avenger has been at B&T Motorsports for a few years now.
It has just recently been transformed from an all motor small block beast to
a single turbo charged monster. The setup was changed to
run in the unlimited class of the Outlaw Small Block Association (OSBA).
It is still powered by the same 412 ci W-8 headed Mopar engine. It
sports a single Precision 98 mm turbocharger mated with a Tial 60 mm
wastegate. We decided to be different and not use fuel injection,
instead go with a blow thru carburetor setup. The Mopar Performance
intake manifold and C&S carburetor handle all of the air intake on the
motor. John Partridge from Bullet Cams did a custom grind on the
camshaft, made specifically for this application only. The 3 speed
Bruno G-Force transmission is going to help get the car down the track.
The Mark Williams rear end with a 3.89 gear installed will put the
power to the ground. The whole turbo system was created in house at
B&T utilizing 321 and 304 stainless steel. The car was taken to Marvin
Wright at Pro Cars for some fine chassis tuning. The suspension had to
be tweaked to handle the additional power. Beadlocks were also
added to the rear wheels to prevent tire shake and make the top end less
painful. The car now sits at 2560 pounds in race trim and is legal to
run the OSBA. We are expecting good results from the combination and
look forward to competing this year. We have been testing with 7 psi
of boost only, but are happy so far!
